HISTORY OF SHIBUI NI

Shibui Ni Farm was built in 1980 by horse breeders Dr. Thomas W. Turner (1924-2010) and Pamela M. Turner (1933-2011). Dr. Turner was born in Kentucky and served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, and Pamela grew up in England riding Thoroughbreds, English and Irish hunters. Both had a love for breeding and raising horses. Arabian horse aficionados may know Shibui Ni as a promoter of the breed due to its involvement with the Arabian Sport Horse Association, Inc. (ASHAI), a non-profit organization that was founded by Mrs. Turner in 1985 to promote the use of Arabian horses in sporting disciplines.

The farm's design was inspired by Dr. Turner's military travels to Japan and contains elements of yin and yang throughout: from the symbol painted on the deck to the front gate of the property. “Shibui” is the Japanese term referring to simple aesthetics, and “Ni” means “two,” as this was the second house built by the Turners. The grounds include a home designed by architect Lewis Rightmeir, a stable, tea house, country cottage, several riding rings, a grass derby field, three miles of trails around the property, a multi-level deck off the house, and a whimsical pond.

SHIBUI NI FARM TODAY

The farm is currently owned by Mr. Calvin Carter and his wife, Mrs. Ellen Carter. The Carters grew up raising horses and are currently the proud owners of two beautiful trail horses, Bonnie and Harley, who love to graze in the meadows of Shibui Ni Farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter have lived in the Suffolk area since 1985,

when they purchased their first farm on Liberty Spring Road.

They are parents to Laurie Carter Bleh and grandparents to Rachel,

Rebecca and Mariellen. Rachel Bleh McLaughlin had her

dream wedding at Shibui Ni Farm on June 8, 2013.
